Die Groß­zü­gig­keit hat drei­er­lei Bedeutungen:
1. ver­zei­hen­de Betrach­tungs­wei­se, Geduld, Nach­sicht und Toleranz
2. Frei­ge­big­keit, d.h. gern tei­lend und schen­kend, in Bezug auf Geld und mate­ri­el­le Güter sowie Lob und Anerkennung.
3. In sei­ner Form oder in sei­nem Stiel weit­räu­mig ange­legt, d.h. Enge und Klein­heit vermeidend.
Groß­zü­gig nen­nen wir einen frei­en Men­schen, der ger­ne aus­teilt und nicht klein­lich dar­über wacht, dass er genug hat, son­dern der das Sei­ne mit den ande­ren teilt. Das Wort „groß­zü­gig“ hat ursprüng­lich die Bedeu­tung, dass es jeman­den zu Gro­ßem zieht und es im Gro­ßen zügig ist, d.h. schnell ist, dass er ohne etwas lang zu beden­ken, Gro­ßes tut und Gro­ßes ver­teilt. Neben groß­zü­gi­gen Men­schen füh­len wir uns wohl. Da wird unser Herz weit. [2]
